Safety threat

The installation of Tangedco’s electricity poles and private company’s solar poles in the water channel leading to Pallamadai tank in Tirunelveli district is a threat to public safety. In addition, the banks of the channel are overgrown with thorny bushes, obstructing the flow of water in the channel. The district administration must suggest alternate locations for the electric poles to prevent accidents and clear weeds from the water channel to facilitate smooth flow of water to the Pallamadai tank.

Road widening

The VOC 60 ft road from Pothigai Nagar to Thirumal Nagar in ward 54 of Tirunelveli corporation was laid in 2021. This narrow road has become increasingly congested in recent times due to TNSTC buses being routed through it following the opening of Porunai museum. The corporation authorities must consider widening this road for convenient transportation.

Foot Over Bridge renovation

The foot overbridge near CSI Cathedral in Palyamkottai was constructed under the MPLAD scheme by MP P.H. Pandian, for the use of children, has two major schools located in the area. However, the bridge is in a dilapidated state and cement slabs on the footpath have fallen due to wear and tear. The bridge has been kept closed for the public for about a year.

The authorities concerned must take steps to renovate the bridge, as thousands of school students are finding it difficult to cross the road in the mornings and evenings.

Train timing concern

The daily Nagercoil-Coimbatore superfast express train departs from Nagercoil at 9:50 p.m. and reaches Tirunelveli junction by 11:10 p.m. Similarly the train starts from Coimbatore by 7:30 p.m. reaches Tirunelveli junction by 2:50 a.m. The late-night arrival of trains from both directions is causing hardship for passengers from Tirunelveli and surrounding region, especially children and senior citizens.

During these hours auto rickshaws are demanding exorbitant fares which are unaffordable for many middle income passengers. Will the railway authorities look into this matter and change the arrival timings at Tirunelveli at least to 9 p.m. for the train from Nagercoil and 5 a.m. for the train from Coimbatore?
