The Tiruppur Corporation has begun involving students into the ‘People Movement for Clean City’ campaign through enforcement of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at households to efficiently execute solid waste management across the 60 wards.
Waste segregation at source and transforming Tiruppur Corporation into a plastic-free city were accorded focus at a meeting held recently at Chikanna Government Arts College.
Students were administered oath to create awareness among the people on eradication of plastic and on waste segregation.
Simultaneously, Corporation officials inspected 155 shops to prevent the use of single-use plastic products that is banned by the government.
During the checks conducted at the shops in Thennampalayam Market, the two Uzhavar Sandhais, Old Bus Stand and New Bus Stand, 40 kg of banned plastic products were confiscated, and a penalty of ₹13,500 was levied on the offenders.
Measures were put in place to educate 10,861 school students across 46 schools within the Corporation limits about plastic elimination and waste segregation. The City Corporation deployed officials to supervise competitions focusing on solid waste management.
There were 1,756 participants and garbage bins were awarded as prizes to 397 students. Cleaning activities were also carried out on 39 school campuses with the assistance of the sanitation workers of the local body.
A private entity authorised by the City Corporation to dispose meat wastes collected 17 tonnes of waste from 193 poultry shops, using eight vehicles. An action plan has also been devised for collection of wastes from industrial and commercial establishments in the City.
The Corporation has entrusted private entities with the responsibility of collecting non-biodegradable wastes zone-wise.
Hefty fine to the tune of ₹38,500 was imposed on industrial and commercial organisations that had not complied with the SOP on waste segregation.
