Tiruppur Corporation to utilise site in Iduvai village for temporary storage of solid waste

A site in Iduvai village will be utilised by the Tiruppur City Municipal Corporation for temporary storage of solid waste, after fulfilment of the conditions of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, according to a directive of the Madras High Court.

The court directive, delivered in response to a petition challenging dumping of wastes by the City Corporation in abandoned quarries in Mudalipalayam and Nallur villages, requires the TNPCB to examine the suitability of a 17-acre area that the civic body has identified at a short distance from the abandoned quarries, for establishing a permanent dumpyard.

Alongwith Iduvai village, the petitioner P. Velusamy had also suggested two other possible locations as landfill sites: Kovilvali village and Elavanthi-Kallipalayam village.

The criteria is that the landfill site should be 100 metres away from river, 200 metres away from pond, 200 metres away from highway habitations, public parks and water supply wells, and 20 km away from airport/ airbase (after obtaining no-objection certificate from the civil aviation authority/ Air Force).

In the case of Kovilvali, there were developed residential plots located in the vicinity of the identified location, and the nearest habitation was at a distance of 50 metres. The same was the case with the location identified in Elavanthi-Kallipalayam village.

As for Iduvai village, the presence of Other District Road and irrigation canal adjacent to the identified location do not fall under the prohibitions.

The City Corporation is learnt to have abided by the Court directive to secure clearance from the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority.

The City Corporation has also accepted to immediately stop dumping unsegregated waste at the abandoned quarry sites in Mudalipalayam and Nallur villages; effectively implement provisions of Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016; prepare and submit short-term and long-term plans for effective and scientific management of solid waste within one month; and prevail upon bulk generators to provide onsite treatment system so as to reduce the load of handling of municipal solid waste.

The City Corporation had also accepted to remove the legacy leachate in the abandoned quarries in Mudalipalayam and Nallur villages.
