At last, Madurai City Traffic Police have put an end to years of traffic congestion on Melur Road in front of the entrances of Omni Bus Stand and MGR Bus Stand.

The police came up with the simple solution of putting up temporary barricade on the median, thus preventing vehicles entering the Omni Bus Stand from K.K. Nagar side and those coming out through the entrance of Omni Bus Stand to take right turn towards Melur side.

All types of vehicles right from omni buses, cars, autorickshaws and two-wheelers used to vie with each other to cross to the opposite lane thus creating a chaotic scene every day, especially during the nights.

“The menace of omni buses violating one-way traffic flow and coming out through the entrance and subsequently stopping on the carriage way of the Melur Road and waiting for passengers used to be the major cause for the traffic congestion. This eventually led to blocking of all cars and other vehicles carrying the passengers from entering the omni bus stand,” a shopkeeper in the vicinity said.

This would lead to vehicles coming from Melur side piling up in this stretch and sometimes overflow to the other side of the road too.

“On most of the days, the traffic congestion at the Omni Bus Stand entrance would choke vehicular movement even at the traffic signal at 120 Feet Road junction,” a traffic police officer said. The barricade has now put an end to this trouble that had remained perennial for long.

The demolition of the arch in the same location also helped the police stream line the traffic flow.

Omni buses coming from Ring Road enter the omni bus stand through the same entrance (next to the entrance of MGR Bus Stand) and come out through the exit near 120 Feet Road junction.

However, the vehicles coming from the city side are now forced to take U-turn at 120 feet Road junction to go to Omni Bus Stand.

The light motor vehicles could take U turn along with the flow of vehicles coming from 120 Feet Road and taking right turn towards MGR Bus Stand.

The traffic police say that vehicles from city side can take free left turn towards 120 Feet Road and then take a U-turn on 120 Feet Road to proceed towards Omni Bus Stand. Though the vehicles have to go around few hundred metres, it serves the purpose of free flow of traffic on Melur Road, the officer said.
