The Tenkasi Forest Division has organised a two-day training programme for teachers on wildlife conservation and prevention of wild animal-human conflict.

The Department of Forest has proposed to train school students on wildlife conservation, its importance and prevention of wild animal-human conflict, the school teachers were hand-picked for the programme that began at Courtallam on Monday. The teachers in turn would train the students.

Inaugurating the training session, Collector A.K. Kamal Kishore explained the need for wildlife conservation and protecting the forests.

District Forest Officer R. Rajmohan narrated the purpose behind the recently launched ‘Friends of Elephants’ programme for averting man-animal conflict and efforts being taken by the forest department to retain the wild animals within the forest by creating sufficient food and water inside the jungle.

“While we take steps for creating sufficient food within the forest by raising the plants much preferred by the elephants, the teachers and the students to be trained by these teachers should tell the public about sending the elephants back into the forest without harming them even if they invade the ranches,” Dr. Rajmohan said.

The trainee teachers were given handbooks detailing the training sessions they had to conduct for the students in their schools.

Mr. Kamal Kishore, Dr. Rajmohan, Sankarankovil MLA E. Raja, Assistant Conservator of Forest Nellainayagam, District Educational Officer Kannan and others planted tree saplings as part of the training session.
