Two men posing as policemen, conducted a vehicle check near Chennai Fort railway station and snatched ₹62 lakh from a businessman engaged in laptop trade. Both fled the scene.
Police said Naresh, a native of Rajasthan, has been living in Sowcarpet and running a laptop service shop on Anna Salai along with his friend Mujeeb. They import laptops from abroad and sell them. They also service and resell old laptops.
Recently, Mujeeb handed over ₹62 lakh to Naresh, asking him to deliver it to an agent. Naresh waited with the cash on his bike near Muthusamy Bridge, close to Chennai Fort railway station. However, the agent never turned up. Naresh then decided to return the money to Mujeeb.
At that point, two unidentified men on a two-wheeler intercepted him near the Muthusamy Bridge signal. Claiming to be police officers, they told him that they needed to question him and took his bike. They made him sit behind the bike and drove a short distance. They dropped Naresh and instructed him to come to the police station. They then left the spot with both the cash and the bike.
Naresh later informed Mujeeb and found out that the men were not police. He then lodged a complaint at the Flower Bazaar police station. Police are now checking CCTV footage.
