Two more held for school bus attack in Mayiladuthurai

J. Akash, 20, and K. Kabilan, 20, were arrested on Sunday in connection with the damage of a school van near Poraiyar on Friday evening.

Another accused, S. Thamaraiselvan, 23, was arrested on Saturday. A video of the incident was circulated widely on social media on Saturday night triggering public outrage.

The mini school bus of a private school in Karaikal was carrying students, a guardian and the driver when it was stopped near Poraiyar at about 5 p.m. Police said the three youths, reportedly after a dispute on the road, abused the driver and passengers, pelted stones at the vehicle and smashed the front windscreen and side mirror.

Several children were terrified and began crying, officers said. The video showed the attack and the distressed pupils. The driver filed a complaint at Poraiyar police station alleging damage, intimidation and use of obscene language. Following the report and the viral footage, district police formed special squads to trace the suspects.

A release from the Mayiladuthurai SP office said when officers moved in on Sunday, Akash attempted to flee through nearby fields and fell, sustaining an injury to his right hand. Medical examination at Sirkazhi Government Hospital confirmed a fracture, police said. Kabilan was also taken into custody. All three have been produced before court.
