The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will build an underpass beneath the existing Railway Over Bridge at Baikampady to facilitate movement of vehicles between National Highway 66 and Baikampady Industrial Area, NHAI Mangaluru Project Director Abdulla Javed Azmi said on Thursday.
Speaking at the district road safety committee meeting here, Mr. Azmi said the NHAI headquarters has approved the proposal and the tender process was on. The earlier sanctioned work at the location got lapsed due to delay in taking up the work, he said. The underpass comprises two concrete boxes which would be erected through box-pushing method, he said.
He also informed the meeting that work on the six-lane Kulur bridge across River Phalguni (Gurupura) was progressing fast and soon, portion of the bridge would get completed. Kulur-Baikampady stretch of NH 66 would be made six-lane with service roads, he added.

Chairing the meeting, Deputy Commissioner H. V. Darshan said as many as 24 works, including road widening, bypass construction and flyover construction, were identified to be executed in NHAI jurisdiction to prevent accidents. However, the execution was getting postponed citing traffic management as an issue. The NHAI should get those works completed by March-end duly taking assistance by the traffic police, the DC said. He also directed Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to install street lights on NH 66 in Kulur stretch.
Meanwhile, discussing traffic congestion at Kallapu, Mahakalipadpu-Jeppinamogaru Junction and Jeppinamogaru Junction, Mr. Darshan directed the Authority to install traffic signal lights in consultation with the traffic police. The meeting was informed that truck terminal construction was under progress at Tannirbhavi and Baikampady by New Mangalore Port Authority.
Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police K Arun, Mangaluru Assistant Commissioner Meenakshi Arya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) K Ravi Shankar and others were present.
