In a significant move to bolster road safety, Vasan Eye Care Hospital has launched a nationwide initiative to provide 1,000 free cataract surgeries for drivers in observance of National Road Safety Month.
As a major part of this campaign, the Madurai Anna Nagar branch has announced a significant welfare scheme for commercial drivers.
Beyond the surgical interventions, the hospital was hosting comprehensive eye screening camps specifically tailored for school and college bus drivers, as well as operators of various commercial vehicles.
During a press briefing, Chief Operating Officer K. Kamal Babu pointed out a shifting trend in ocular health, noting that cataracts were no longer exclusive to the elderly.
He revealed that while the condition was previously associated with those over the age of 60, medical professionals were now diagnosing patients as young as 45, making early detection vital for maintaining safety on the roads.
“To combat this, the hospital has issued a mandate advising all professional drivers to undergo eye examinations at least once every six months and to remain diligent in wearing their correct prescription lenses. By addressing these visual impairments through free medical care and increased awareness, Vasan Eye Care aims to mitigate preventable accidents and ensure that the nation’s drivers are fit for the high-stakes demands of their profession,” Dr. Kamal Babu added.
