Vijay Bhatt was the director behind some of the classics of Hindi cinema like Ram Rajya, Baiju Bawra, Hariyali Aur Raasta, Himalay Ki God Mein, Goonj Uthi Shehnai, etc. His 32nd death anniversary recently took place on October 17. Not many know that he was popular filmmaker Vikram Bhatt’s grandfather. Vikram spoke about his grandfather and his life in an interview with us.

Vikram, not too many know that Vijay Bhatt, who made timeless classics like Ram Rajya and Baiju Bawra, was your grandfather
My grandfather is a great man that time forgot sadly. The maker of Ram Rajya, Baiju Bawra, Himalay Ki Godmein, Hariyali Aur Raasta, Goonj Uthi Shehnai, to name a few.
My God! All these are remembered to this day for their brilliant storytelling and incomparable music
That’ right. He lived out his last years waiting for some recognition, none came. He waited for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award year after year, but his name was never announced, sadly.
How was your rapport with him?
I was a very young director when he passed away, taking my first steps into the film world. And he was a great director, having lived his life, waiting for the last hurrah. His triumph and his story taught me a lot of things but one thing he taught me unknowingly.
What is that?
You are not great if you can get ignoramuses to accept that fact. You are great, if you have accomplished what you had set out to accomplish for yourself. If you give them the power to honour you, you will also give them the power to dishonour you. He did not leave me anything material but he left me a legacy that few might know today but one that I strive to achieve each day.
What do you feel about Sanjay Leela Bhansali remaking your grandfather’s Baiju Bawra?
If there is one filmmaker in the industry who can do it, it is Mr Bhansali. I have tremendous respect for his craft.
