A Wisconsin man is in police custody after brutally bludgeoning his mother to death with a baseball bat, Us Weekly has learned.
Hayward Jenkins has been charged with one count of first-degree intentional homicide in the death of his mother, Cheryl Jenkins, who was 66.
Investigators confirm that it was Cheryl’s fiancé who called West Milwaukee Police to her apartment at around 8 a.m. on February 24.
According to the son’s criminal complaint, provided to Us, he told police that Hayward, 38, showed up at her home the night before and was allowed to spend the night in the guest room.
The fiancé told police it was around 4 a.m. when a loud noise roused him from sleep. He said he checked the living room, saw nothing unusual, and returned to bed.
A few hours later, he woke up for the day, and tried calling Jenkins on his phone, suspecting she moved to another bedroom with her son. But it rang endlessly, and the fiancé told police that he entered the other bedroom and found Jenkins and called 911, finding his betrothed face down on the guest room floor.
Hayward was nowhere to be seen.
Police and first responders arrived and tried to revive the unresponsive woman at the scene.
However, in time, it became clear nothing was bringing Cheryl back, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office autopsied the remains, and determined Jenkins died from multiple blunt force injuries, according to officials.
During the violent attack, Hayward fractured his mother’s skull in a few places and caused hemorrhaging in her brain, police said.
Detectives said that a blood-stained wooden bat was found on top of Cheryl’s body and that she had a large gaping wound in the back of her head.
Surveillance footage that was obtained from across the neighborhood later showed the son running from his mom’s residence to a nearby bus stop. He waited and eventually boarded a 6 a.m. bus, cops said.
Family members spoke to police and suggested that authorities look for Hayward at Potawatomi Casino Hotel in Milwaukee. Sure enough, that is exactly where police found — and handcuffed — him at around 12:30 p.m., according to officials.
Hayward told police that he and his mother got into an argument about some silver coins and her ignoring him. The son said that his mother had pointed a pair of scissors at him and that he “got angry with the situation and flipped out” on her.
He allegedly confessed to grabbing the bat and pummeling her to death. He allegedly said to police that while he didn’t want to, he ended up striking her multiple times as she was sitting in a chair. It was unclear if the son had attacked Cheryl from behind.
He allegedly said to police that he was “wrong for murdering my mother,” according to the complaint.
Hayward is being held on a $300,000 bond. He is due back in court on March 10.
He has not been asked for pleas, and calls to his attorney were not returned Wednesday, March 4.
