Overspeeding, poor lane discipline and failure to yield right of way were the major contributors to traffic accidents that killed pedestrians.

Fatalities in pedestrians-related road accidents last year rose to 649 from 584 in 2024, data from Delhi Traffic Police has shown.
The total number of accidents where a pedestrian was injured or killed also saw an increase – from 2,184 in 2024 to 2,192 in 2025.
According to the police, pedestrians remain among the most vulnerable of road users due to speeding, poor lane discipline and failure to yield right of way.
‘Offending vehicles not identified in most cases’
“Apart from the deaths, as many as 1,738 pedestrians sustained injuries. This is a significant number. Out of 771 fatal crashes this year, the vehicle responsible remained unidentified in 330 cases,” said Satya Vir Katara, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
The data shows that private cars were involved in the highest number of pedestrian fatalities in 2025, accounting for 92 deaths, followed by two-wheelers (75) and heavy goods vehicles (43). E-rickshaws were linked to 16 deaths, while DTC buses accounted for nine fatalities and other buses for 15.
In 2024, a total of 1,777 pedestrians were injured and in 308 fatal cases, the type of vehicle involved could not be determined. Private cars were responsible for 81 deaths that year, followed by two-wheelers (53), heavy vehicles (38) and DTC buses (12). E-rickshaws were involved in eight fatal accidents, while tempos and TSR autos accounted for 23 and 14 deaths respectively.
To raise awareness on road safety, Delhi Traffic Police organised a road safety event on Friday, which saw the participation of over 2,000 people, including school and college students.
“As part of National Road Safety Month — being observed from January 1 to 31 — various awareness programmes are being conducted across the city to promote traffic compliance among citizens,” Mr. Katara said.
