Woman accuses ASI of molestation; officer shunted, probe on

A police officer from the Ashram police station was transferred to district lines after being accused of molesting a woman from the Northeast during a raid on a shop in Maharani Bagh, police said on Sunday.

The incident came to light after a viral X post accused Virender Kumar, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), of “molesting the woman” during the search operation on Saturday, sparking outrage and demands for swift action.

“Today, around 10 a.m. at Maharani Bagh, this ASI harassed and molested a woman from the Northeast while she was at a shop. He entered and searched the shop for alcohol without a warrant. Even after the woman told him that he was searching the shop illegally, he continued the search and found nothing… he grabbed her face, and touched her private parts, leaving her deeply traumatised,” the post read.

Following the post, the Delhi police issued a statement saying the matter is being probed and the ASI has been transferred.

Police version

The police said a PCR call was received around 9.30 a.m. on Saturday about the alleged sale and consumption of illicit liquor at a Sunlight Colony shop near Maharani Bagh. The call was forwarded to Mr. Kumar. He and his team “found and seized 40 bottles of illicit liquor from the shop”, the police said.

Nearly two hours after the raid, another PCR call was received by a woman alleging “inappropriate conduct” by the ASI. The police claimed that the second call appeared to be an “attempt to put pressure on the officer” for not taking any legal action.

A group of people from the Northeast assembled outside the Ashram police station and demanded stern action against the officer. The police assured the protesters that the complaint would be probed fairly.
