The Barke police on Sunday arrested a 28-year-old woman on charges of cheating an electronics shop to a tune of ₹1.98 lakh by presenting invalid cheques.

The accused has been identified as Farida Begum, the wife of Ramiz Raja, a resident of Muttur village. According to police, Farida purchased three high-end laptops through an acquaintance from the complainant, Jayaram, who runs Laptop Bazar at a mall on Mahatma Gandhi Road.

However, the cheques she presented for the purchase were fake, thus forcing the shop owner to file a complaint with the Barke police, which registered a case of criminal breach of trust and cheating against the accused. Investigating Officer Vinayak Toragal and women police personnel arrested Farida under the guidance of Police Inspector Mohan Kottary. She was produced before the jurisdictional magistrate, who remanded her to judicial custody till November 3, police said.

The accused has adopted a similar modus operandi by visiting jewellery shops and electronic gadget outlets to make purchases after presenting fake cheques, police said. She has cases against her in Kavoor, Bajpe, Moodbidri and Mulky stations in the Commissionerate, Puttur Police Station in Dakshina Kannada district, and Shirva Police Station in Udupi district. After she skipped bail in a case registered by the Mulky police, the court concerned had issued a warrant, police said.
