Woman from Assam sexually assaulted by youth, 2 minors in Thoothukudi

The Srivaikundam All Women Police in Thoothukudi have arrested a youth and two minors for allegedly sexually assaulting a migrant worker from Assam.

The police said Mohammed Mahbul Hussein, 27, of Tirunelveli, who was supplying migrant labourers on a ‘commission basis’ for brick kiln, tiles and hallow blocks manufacturing units, and for construction and farming, had sent a couple from Assam to a hallow blocks manufacturing unit at Arasarkulam near Srivaikundam two weeks ago. As the working conditions in the unit were harsh, and the wages were very low, the couple decided to move to Kerala in search of work. When they were on their way to Tirunelveli in an autorickshaw, Mohammed contacted the couple over phone, and threatened them to return to the unit.

When they ignored him and continued their journey, Mohammed and two minor boys allegedly intercepted them at an isolated place near Sivanthipatti on the outskirts of Palayamkottai. Mohammed allegedly told the autorickshaw driver that the couple had stolen money from a quarry owner.

After the autorickshaw driver left the spot, Mohammed and the two minors took the couple to a nearby forest, beat up the man, and sexually assaulted the woman.

Later, the couple narrated their ordeal to passers-by, who alerted the police. After admitting the couple to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for treatment, the Srivaikundam All Women Police filed a case against Mohammed and his juvenile associates, who were arrested at night.
