A 55-year-old woman living in a village near Uthukottai in Tiruvallur district was murdered on Friday morning, allegedly for her jewellery. The police arrested S. Venkatesan, 25, an autorickshaw driver, from Koyambedu on Saturday. The victim, S. Saraswathi, lived in a single-storey house while her two sons worked in Chennai. According to investigators, Venkatesan repeatedly asked Saraswathi for money to buy an autorickshaw, as he had been driving a rented vehicle, But, she refused to give him money. Around 10 a.m. on Friday, while Saraswathi was cleaning the first floor of her house, Venkatesan allegedly killed her by striking the back of her head with an iron rod. He then reportedly stole her gold chain, an earring, and her mobile phone before escaping to a friend’s house in Koyambedu.
