Woman’s decomposed body found in Delhi apartment, gaunt husband, disabled son rescued

The decomposed body of a 64-year-old woman was found in her apartment in Jamia Nagar, while her ailing husband, former Jamia Millia Islamia teacher Siraz Khan, 70, was rescued, along with their son, the police said on Monday. The couple’s 50-year-old son, Imran, who has mobility impairment and suffers from intellectual impairment as well, couldn’t call for help, the police added.

An officer said they have inspected the spot, and proceedings under Section 176 (procedure for investigation) of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita are under way.

According to the preliminary probe, the woman, Aftab Jehan, is likely to have died a natural death due to illness. However, the exact cause of the death will be ascertained only after the post-mortem examination, said an officer.

The couple’s daughter, who lives in Hong Kong, had been trying to reach them for the past few days. When she failed, she requested her maternal uncle, W. Ahmed Khan, to check on her parents, the officer added.

The police were alerted by the woman’s brother, who was unable to open the door.

“On breaking open the door, we found the woman’s decomposed body on the bed, with her husband lying beside her in a fragile condition. Siraj Khan was immediately rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Hemant Tiwari said.

On seeing the police team, Mr. Imran, who could not speak properly, insisted that his parents were “sleeping”, said the DCP. “He appeared to have confined himself to the flat for three to four days without food. He could also not call for help,” the DCP added. Mr. Imran was shifted to GTB Hospital.
