Police Commissioner Shanka Brata Bagchi, KGH Superintendent I Vani and others watch a CPR demonstration organised as part of World Anaesthesia Day celebrations on Beach Road in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.

An awareness walk and CPR demo were organised jointly by the Indian Society of Anaesthesia (ISA), Visakhapatnam city branch, Department of Anaesthesia, Andhra Medical College, and the Department of Emergency Medicine, King George Hospital (KGH) on Beach Road on Thursday. The event marked World Anaesthesia Day and CPR Awareness Week (October 13 to 17).

Dr. Naveen SNR of KGH said that World Anaesthesia Day commemorates the day in 1846 when Dr. William TG Morton successfully demonstrated the use of ether anaesthesia. It was a major advancement in the area of surgery. It also identifies and honours the key role played by anaesthesiologists.

A CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) demo was organised as part of the ongoing CPR Awareness Week at Beach Road. CPR can save lives even before a patient reaches the doctor for treatment. A little training in patient handling and giving chest compressions goes a long way.

The chief guest, Police Commissioner Shanka Brata Bagchi appreciated the role played by anaesthesiologists and emergency medicine doctors in saving lives. He called for year-round CPR training for citizens rather than just during the awareness week.

Dr. I Vani, Superintendent, KGH, Dr. KVSM Sandhya Devi, Principal, AMC, also attended the event.
