The Yamuna river’s water quality in Delhi worsened in October compared to last month and is unfit even for bathing, except at Palla, where it enters the city, according to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee’s (DPCC) monthly report.
This was expected because floodwaters in September had diluted and flushed out pollutants, temporarily improving water quality.
Thousands of devotees will gather on the banks for Chhath Puja, from October 25 to 28, to pray to the Sun God.
The DPCC sampled water for this month’s report on October 9. Starting October 21, water released to Delhi from Haryana increased sharply. Water from the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana, upstream of Delhi, rose, while water released to irrigation canals in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana dropped to nil, increasing the volume of water.
