This November, children across cities in India will look skyward with a shared sense of purpose and curiosity. The inaugural Young Birders’ Month (YBM), a national initiative dedicated to introducing young people to the world of birds, will unfold across the country through a series of local and virtual events. Bird walks, quizzes, art workshops, storytelling sessions and online courses will together form the backbone of this month-long celebration of Nature.
The initiative is being coordinated by Early Bird and WWF-India. “The aim is to help children observe birds not merely as colourful sights in the sky, but as indicators of ecological balance and as entry points into understanding biodiversity,” says Farida Tampal of WWF-India.
November has been chosen with thoughtful intent. “It is the period when migratory birds arrive in India’s wetlands and forests and it also includes Dr. Salim Ali’s birth anniversary on November 12 and Children’s Day on November 14,” adds Farida.
Schools, birding clubs, conservation groups and independent educators have been invited to organise events under the YBM banner. Each participating organisation can design its own programme, whether a neighbourhood bird walk, a poster competition or an online discussion about bird habitats. Event details may be submitted through the ‘Host an Event’ page on the official website (www.youngbirders.in)
