A heated exchange broke out between YSRCP and TDP corporators during the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) council meeting on Wednesday, after YSRCP members alleged that no fresh beneficiaries had been added to the social welfare pension list since the NDA government took charge in the State.

During the meeting, corporator Rehana Nahid Mohammed sought details on the number of new pensions sanctioned for the differently abled and the elderly under the NTR Bharosa scheme in the city. The officials replied that no new pensions had been issued since July 1, 2024. The response triggered arguments between corporators of the two parties.

The meeting also took up the recent diarrhoea outbreak in the city, which reportedly left more than 300 people unwell. In total, 168 proposals were discussed, including updates on Operation Budameru works, the stray dog menace, and the strengthening of the city’s drainage network.
